WHO ARE SPITFIRE 4?

Spitfire 4 are: Tony Zemaitis (Gtr/vox), Ian Smith (Drums) & Julian Farrow (bass)...

This trio has been together for over 3 years but the band members have also each been playing on the Medway and London band scene for more than twenty years. They played extensively in the 80s Medway Scene that brought you the likes of the Milkshakes & the Prisoners.

Singer / guitarist / songwriter Tony Zemaitis has played in some well known Kent bands like Johnny Gash & The Sweet Smell of Success and The Heroes. But his name may also sound familiar to guitarists as his late father was a well-known and much respected guitar maker. Sporting an old f-hole (for slide) and his trademark Zemaitis guitar, as one journalist once put it, "Tony can't help but be a walking advert".

Bass player Julian Farrow is an ex publican – Alexandra & Tap ’n’ Tin. His early musical influences were playing harmonica with Ralph McTell on his father’s honeymoon, meeting Dr John in a toilet, and John Lee Hooker in his kitchen. He failed at playing bass with Soft Machine (too complicated) & Dave Stewart (not enough money). Julian also once went out with a girl who lived next door to the bloke who threw Frank Zappa from the stage at the Findsbury Park Rainbow!

Drummer Ian Smith has played in many indie, rock 'n' roll and punk bands since 1983 including The Dentists. He has toured America for the last 3 years with his other band, Armitage Shanks. Ian has featured on over 20 records and CDs over the years and is also a prolific writer having produced many books and most recently, a radio play.

In 2008, Sean McDonough (original bass player) decided to take a sabbatical due to personal commitments. Julian had stood in for Sean a few times so was the natural choice to take over  to try and keep the band in time.
